I mean, should a new PSU from Newegg have all of the necessary connections for my Dimension 8300 (one year old)?

No, they aren't standard. If you put a dell psu in a standard computer it will fry the mobo. There have been other threads like this in the past and that is the response they have gotten.

I would get confirmation from Dell that your system uses a PSU with the standard pin-out before I attempted it.

Another problem with the Dell cases is that on many models the plate behind the PSU does not have a cut-out for the on/off switch that most standard psus have.

yes, many thread and many people were proven wrong over and over

ie this thread

A 8300 pin out

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/sm/techov.htm

off the other thread the ATX refernece
http://www.thetechzone.com/reviews/powersupply/enermax450/page3.shtml

everything is the same except -5V on pin 18. You can just pull #18 out of a normal atx power and it'll be EXACTLY the same.

The only thing you have to worry about is the physical dimension of the power.. That does not look like a regular atx size power.. but i dont have one so good luck

The ATX PSU will electrically work with the Dimension 8300. The only problem is the case opening won't work with most ATX PSU. However, the 250W Dell PSU is pretty robust, what devices are you using that require you to upgrade?

Here's a pic of what somebody did to their 400SC (which is a near twin of the 8300) in order to fit a normal PSU with the on/off switch.

There are some that will fit, like the Dell compatibile PSUs at PC Power and Cooling.

Be warned, however, that some Dells use a small six (?)-pin connector as well as the regular ATX connector, which looks like one half of the old AT-style connectors. However, the connector you see on most modern PSUs which looks identical, didn't work for me when I was repairing a Dell. In fact, the machine would refuse to turn on.
