I just installed a new 40GB Maxtor ATA133 D740X-6L (ball bearings). Compared to my former IBM 75GXP, it is very noisy on seeks...particularly when booting up. When it boots up, there are a series of 3 to 5 loud clicks that almost sound like kernals of popcorn popping. I bought it from Costco so returning it would not be a problem.

Any other users out there who can comment on the noise from this hard drive during seeks, particularly on booting up???

Even storage review admitted that these drives are the noisiest during seeks. I'm not sure about the bootup sound .

Yeah, the reviews have been saying that the drives are loud. However, popcorn popping??? That sounds a little bit too scary for me! Wait for some more replies from the board first, but if it was me, I'd try another one.

make sure it's screwed in tight, also make sure the power cable is firmly in - maybe a power short?

try returning and see if it's the hard drive.

I'd say run some diagnostics on it. Run some burn in tests but make sure not to put important data on it. I've used these drives but never heard any clicks during bootup. try to maxtor website.

Since the concensus seems to be that the seek noises I am experiencing aren't normal, back to Costco I go! Tx.
