Are the newer Seagate SATA drives supposed to be loud

I have 3 Seagate drives. 1 - 80GB IDE, 1 - 200GB IDE, both of which are near silent, and 1 - 80GB SATA that is brand new. It's loud. It's fine when not seeking, but on HD activity it's easily as loud as my 5 year old Maxtor was. Is this normal for the new drives? Speed and everything look to be fine, but after my other two seagates, I expected near silence and was kind of shocked by this....

yeah i was very disappointed with the new seagate 7200.7 drives. i had used seagate barracuda IV and V drives religiously for their quiet operation until this latest generation came out. i'm guessing the 7200.8 series are just as loud. you might want to check out samsung spinpoint drives. they are noticeably quiet and relatively fast.

Try suspending them in a 5 in drive bay using elastic - it will quiet it down a good bit.

That's good to hear...because I was getting worried that mine might have problems. Compared to the 2 other Seagates I have in my machine, it's a jackhammer. My barracudas are almost silent, so it's amazing to hear the seek noise on the SATA drive. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I'm glad it's just part of this design, and not an indication that the new drive is faulty.
