Are the new DDR MBs backwards compatible with 100/133 Mhz SDRAM ?

I have been reading and reading reviews, and such, and can not find an answer to this. It would seem a shame to have to throw away all that good SDRAM is one bought a new DDR compliant board. Better would be being able to just remove the SDRAM when the DDR ram came down in price and continue to use the board.

Anyone know, for sure, what it is up with this point ?

The ALi Makik1 chipset boards are capable of supporting both SDR and DDR, the AMD 760 boards are not they will only run DDR. The VIA KT266 is not too far off and should support both DDR and SDR also.

Although the ALi and VIA chipsets themselves support both DDR and SDR, both types of SDRAM use different DIMM slots, so it's up to the manufacturer whether to implement both types of DIMM slots and whether or not they want to take up the PCB real estate.

The AMD chipset does not support SDR.

Thanks, Dulanic and AndyHui.
So, I guess the point is somewhat moot, since a board such as the Iwill KA266 see photo:

which, like any of the DDR boards that I know of, will only provide hardware support for DDR and thus make it impossible to use our existing SDRAM. Correct, as you see it ?

Ken20: correct. In Iwill's case they have only chosen to implement the DDR DIMM slots. DDR DIMMs are 184 pins. SDR DIMMs are 168 pins.

It will be impossible to use our current SDRAM.
