Be sure to get the models with the L prefix! They are quiet, but the ones without the L are not. I have one and it was quite the bargain and is speedy, but not quiet.

Quite good drives at being quiet !!!

I'm sorry, but I don't quite get this thread. I was under the impression that this was a thread about Maxtor drives. But, I must say, I am quite suprised at the responses. Did I not read the topic correctly?

I must admit , I am quite confused.

I had expected responses to a hardware conundrum. Instead, I must admit, I am quite suprised to find this is not the case at all. In fact, it is quite the opposite.


I believe I have misread the topic. And for that, I am quite taken aback at my hastiness.


I appeal to your forgiveness...........for I am quite embarrassed.

Jesus you guys are losers.... The spindle noise on the Maxtor quiet drives is practically inaudible, but the seek noise is pretty loud.

It's not a bad question, though. I may build a new system using a Shuttle SS51 (or possibly wait for the nforce version, since an AMD setup will be just as good, and cheaper), and would like to keep things as silent as possible, that being one of the nice things about the SS51.

I would have to agree with you. seek noise is loud compared to the WD and Seagate drives.

I wouldn't characterize the seek noise as being pretty loud, audible yes, loud no.

I'm not quite sure I understand this thread. Finding it hard to really concentrate on it due to the noise of my HD. Maybe i need a quiet hard drive.

The "L" series is quiet and idle, noisy during seek. I have a pair of them in raid0 and they are quite nice.
