Are the big price drops over for now?

Now that ATI and Nvidia have both shot their loads with major chip releases, are we in for a period of relatively stable pricing? That is what usually happens, right? Over the next year or so, until both sides get close to releasing their next generation of part, prices for specific graphics cards will stay around where they are now, with slight declines over time assuming no shortages.

Next pricing changes will happen when the GTX560 comes out (which one rumour puts as the 25th January).
That will probably impact the pricing of the HD6800 and GTX460 cards, and put them more stably at lower prices (rather than current pricing which is mainly due to rebates). I doubt there will be a huge amount of movement higher up.

When the 560 is released, I think 460 and 6850 prices will be what they are today after rebate. So if people wanna wait to get the 460, they will see today's price but without the rebates.

I don't think 460s will sell below $100. I don't think there's much profits to be made for NV at $100.

Same goes for 6850, although I think the 6850 have a lot more room to fall than 460

Stable pricing, no. Now is the time when prices will drop. Not by a large amount and not quickly, but they will drop. Both companies have their refreshes out, they are fairly competitive with each other and the manufacturing process should be in much better shape than when the 5 series launched.

I don't think 460s will sell below $100.

They have already went below. Galaxy cards were available for $90 after rebates.

I think the 460 will be EOL'd when the 560 comes out. at ~$100 nVidia will likely be happy to see them go. Remember that the gf104 is about the same size as Cypress. Not exactly a big money maker at it's current pricing.

Is the Galaxy one the 786MB version from Tigerdirect with 2 rebates and a $10 Visa card discount?? You need to go through a lot of work for that. And furthermore, Tigerdirect is backordered something like 100 of them as of a few days before Xmas. So if you didn't get in early, you ain't getting it.

460s (especially the 1GB version) will sell out way before it'll reach $100, or NV will just stop making them in favor of the 560s. It makes no economic sense whatsoever to be making that product and selling them at $100. Sure you will get a good deal here and there as the product end of life, but don't expect them to last.

yup, that is the one.

I'm not saying that everyone is guaranteed to get it. Or that you can order it whenever at the snap of your fingers. Just saying that it did already drop below $100 so it doesn't make any sense to say that it will sell out before it hits $100 because it already happened.

Its just the 768MB models that have been on sale a lot. The 1GB version has held its price fairly well since launch. I was thinking of buying a 1GB version if it dropped to $140 or less. Now, I wouldn't pay more than $120 for it. Might not get to that price, but I don't really care if it doesn't. That is what they are worth to me since it only provides a small average performance increase over the 768MB version.

Yeah I'm thinking the prices of the 460's have pretty much bottomed out. I could see the 768mb ones hitting $100 and the 1gb at $120, but no lower than that. Pretty soon we will all have to pay $200+ for a 560, which isn't the end of the world if it's 30% faster with 2gb of VRAM.

Why would the 560 have 2gb of vram? I would think 1gb and hopefully no 786mb models again.

Also the release of the HD 6990 might drive the price of the GTX 580 & HD 6970 down a bit.

Why would it come with 2GB vram when green team flagships don't?

It’s unlikely to have 2 GB unless substantial changes are made to its ROP configuration in comparison to previous nVidia parts.

There are currently GTX 460 cards that come with 2gb of ram. IMO NV needs to come out with 2gb variants of the 560 to compete with AMD.

nVidia has a big glaring price gap right at $299 right now which is probably where GTX 560 will fit in quite nicely.

I wouldn't expect to see GTX 460 prices to shift any unless you have a vendor with an over supply trying to clear out back stock with rebates.

Why? What would adding another gigabyte of memory give the potential videocard purchaser?

Seems like that would be a crappy spot for it to be. I think they will use it to replace the 460 which is an upper mid-range card, traditionally a $150~200 price point but recently has moved up a bit (maybe $180~220). They have a gap at the $300 point but who cares. Makes a lot more sense to keep product in one of the best selling price groups.
