Ask the real pop musicians out there if they're relevent.
The answer will be something like "always" or "tremendously". There are almost no proper pop songs that don't have Beatles DNA sprinkled in them... well aside from crap like Ke$ha or whatever her name is.
While you're on the topic, Big Star has influenced a tremendous amount of guitar heavy pop as well.
