Are Steam versions of games buggier than the regular disk versions?

I recently paid $10 for Splinter Cell Double Agent because I had lost my disk from way back and wanted to finish beating it.

This thing is buggy as all damn hell!

Screen and audio flickers in and out during what would be the opening splash screens.
Sometimes saved games don't load, forcing me to replay from an earlier save.
Sometimes the game just crashes on me.
It destroys Windows Aero and makes my entire taskbar disappear.

The game itself sucks a lot more than I remembered.

Stealth can be really inconsistent.
Enemies are too clairvoyant in quite a number of instances.
Sam's gun skills still suck balls.
I shoot, from behind cover, a sniper that's all the way on the roof and suddenly the entire camp is on my position.
I'm having to play the same scenarios over and over and over again because clairvoyant enemies + shitty aiming system + weak gun + powerful enemy guns that kill in one burst = lots of dying.
 
Short answer - No.

Long answer - Not in my experience totalling over 30 Steam games. The only game that has had issues is Fallout 3 and the general consensus is that fallout 3 has issues full stop.
 
Same as regular disk version, but on Steam. If a game has problems it's either the game itself (ie needs a patch from the developer) or some hardware issue with your PC.

I don't think but god are some games buggy! It really sucks.
 
Some publishers are bad beacuse when they patch their games their downloadable patches dont work on the steam versions and they dont bother informing steam that there is an update untill people start to complain.

Yea luckily almost all the games I own are larger games or older games so I haven't run into that problem with patches yet.
 
You're running into bugs because that game itself is extremely buggy. The retail version is no different.
 
Hell no, Steam versions are just as good, if not better than regular disk versions, since often times they don't include the DRM the disk versions come with.

Splinter Cell Double Agent is just a really, really buggy game. I bought it for $5 on Steam but I haven't had any problems (surprisingly, considering all the bad things I heard about SC DA)
 
I managed to beat Double Agent for the first time very recently after having installed it 2 years ago... 🙂
 
I got in on the $5 SC😀A deal. Saved games are really annoying. It's really a crap shoot if you can load them. Other than that, there hasn't been anything that has been a show stopper.
 
I remember the game wouldn't work with 7900GT, and it had problems with nVidia drivers. Bought it for 5 bucks the other day. It ran perfectly fine for me on the GTX280 🙂
 
No, they are equally buggy to the disk based game. Stalker SoC will still not play nice with my computer most of the time.
 
I've never had a problem.

I'm going to take a huge huge flying acrocircus leap and blame your vista system, which I'm going to bet is not the same system that you originally played the game with. Vista/drivers/compatibility issue imo 😛
 
The only way the steam version would be buggier would be due to a recently released patch. Sometimes these patches don't make it to the Steam version, leaving steam users with an outdated, and perhaps buggier, version.
