Are socket 939 Opterons still the hot thing right now?

I notice I don't hear as much chit chat from the Opteron crew anymore. I'm wondering if it's because of what AMD did, cutting off the little guys from selling Opterons as well as jacking up the prices of all chips.

So, is it still the in thing or is there a new chip?

Optys are still awesome ;)

They usually seem to o'c a bit better than A64s/X2s, and some say they run a bit cooler, plus they come with a better retail hsf iirc...

But IRL the extra cache doesn't make much difference, so if you were looking at say a 3800+ X2 and a opty 165, the x2 was say $40 cheaper, i'd go for the X2...

Isn't Manchester older than the Venice though? How can I tell if a chip is a 06 Manchester?

No, the Manchester is a dual core chip with 512KB per core while Toledo had 1MB per core. The older single core names were Winchester and Newcastle.

No the Manchester core is used on the later 3800+ X2's. Venice is the latest core for the single core 3800+.

Ahhhhhhhhh, I'm sorry. I'm getting it mixed up with the single core chips! Venice is the single core 3200+ etc. Sorry about that.

Opty rules. Those new 3800s arent bad but you dont have quite the upside potential as you do with an opty ;)

Its been noted that the Opteron additional cache is not currently that useful, but I'd also add that newer games coming out might take advatange of that extra cache, so I bought a 165 figuring it would only help performance. For comparison's sake, look at the benchmarks with CoD2 and a 512mb 7800 compared to a 256 7800 card.

Opteron cache isn't that useful, but it certainly doesn't hurt! Plus Opterons generally o/c a bit better.

according to this article
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2330&p=5

it gives u like another 5 frames. not bad i dont mind 5 free frames :)

and also u can lable ur self an FX equivilent stock speeds wise ( i know unlocked multipliers and nice overclockability)

My 148 does 3GHZ on air no problem. They are great chips. My Venice was much more expensive and only did 3.2 on Phase...My 148 is still on air, looking for a new case and things before I set up the Mach II again.

the extra cache helps for compiling code and everyday applications. So if you're building a gaming rig, the extra cache does nothing for you.

BTW: My 2006 0601 X2 3800 is priming away at 2.9 and 1.4 volts right now, so I do agree that it is the chip to get.

2006 X2 is the chip to get over an Opteron Dual Core, they OC like crazy and sometimes require LOWER volts than the same speed Opty to get the same OCs. You'll want to get a better HSF tho, so go on ebay and buy a Stock AMD 4 Heatpipe heatsink (they come with the Opterons), or buy a ThermalRight XP90/120, or Scythe Ninja if you want to OC.
