Are shielded cables better to use than standard cables for Networks?

Are shielded cables better/recommended over standard cables? All my network cables are shielded. But the phone cable my DSL modem is hooked up to is not (it's a standard telephone cable). I get frequent resets on my DSL modem when I make or get incomming calls. If I use a shielded RJ11 (telephone) cable, will I experience no modem resetting?

The cables my modem came with are shielded, but i am using a standard telephone cable to hook up my phone line to the DSL modem. Should I go buy a shielded telephone cable? I need one at least 100ft...

what are the benefits of shielded cables (both RJ45 and RJ11)?

If you are running 100' ft of phone cable, somethings wrong, but I digress.

Shielded cable will help if your line is running near any power circuits or flourescent lighting, or if there is any kind of strong-interference producing things around [fridges, microwaves?].

If the run is short, unshielded usually works just fine. If it's a longer run and line quality / speed is important, go shielded.

Shielded cable will only work if you have jacks designed to use it. Just having braid around the wires is not a shield, it must be grounded at one end (one end only!).

If the jack has a metal entrance (to contact the metal band around the plug of the cable), then it'll work. It would be unusual to have a shielded-capable jack installed by the builder or phone company. You'll probably have to also install one of those if you decide to use the shielded cable. You'll also have to have a local ground where you install the jack. If the plate/jack are in a metal box, then just ground to the box.

For reference, 99% of the Ethernet networks in the world use UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cabling and it works fine unless some bozo laid it on top of a flourescent light or something.
