Are seeing eye dogs really that well behaved?

Story I would like to share with you to show one way or the other on this.

I was eating at the Outback Steakhouse a few days ago. Sitting at the next table was a woman, her big golden seeing eye dog (don't know what breed), and a guy (don't know if it was her date or anything, but anyway). They got their food served first and the waitress dropped a plate with a 8 ounce steak and vegetables on the floor. The waitress was impressed because the dog didn't move an inch to get the steak! The woman said her dog was well trained and wouldn't do such a thing. Well, the waitress ran to the back to get a towel to clean up the mess. I was watching the dog from the corner of my eye when he leaned over quickly, took the steak and swallowed it in just a couple bites. This steak was inhaled!

I got a good laugh out of that. No one even saw it happen until the waitress came back and asked where the steak was.

Anyway, I got to thinking....how well behaved are seeing eye dogs? Could most of them resist a steak being put in front of them?

The ones I have been around have been extremely well behaved, better than most children. But...

...they are still a dog, and have their limits.

OMG that is so ironic you posted this.
On the bus today was a blind lady that I always see walking around our neighborhood with her seeing eye dog. I have ALWAYS been amazed at seeing eye dogs. I have NEVER seen one even 1 step out of line.

Here on this some-what crowded bus this dog stood still as a statue, perfectly trained on his job. It just amazing to me the intelligence and obedience these animals have. Not to mention the love their owners must have for them.

Whoever came up with this idea is a saint and a genious.

And yeah you really cant blame the dog for eating the steak. He probably actually thought it was for him if it was dropped in front of him and so close and simply left there for X mins. Now why the waitress wouldnt at that point even OFFER the dog the steak is beyond me.

Well, I know some dog owners have their dogs stick to a strict feeding schedule and amount. So I can understand why it wasn't offered.

This steak was on the floor for only 20 seconds after the waitress walked away. I was amazed that the dog waited until no one was looking and then inhaled that thing. 8 ounces of boneless filet is quick to eat if you are a big dog with a mouth desiged to grind up meat. 🙂

Last week at the mall I saw a woman sitting with TWO guide dogs.
I joked to my fiancee that she was SO blind that one dog wasn't enough.

I gotta laugh about the steak. My ex-gf had a golden retriever (which are often used as guide dogs) and she would have done the EXACT same thing. She was well-trained and well-behaved, but she was also smooth as anything. She did "bad" stuff all the time, but she was adept at making sure nobody saw her do it. Smart dogs!

So now you know that they're well behaved, but ALSO smart 🙂 Wait till nobody is looking 😀

They are very well trained. I had a friend who helped to raise one (I guess they allow people to volunteer to help raise them, when they are young). Handed them a big long list of rules of how to treat the dog, what to let them do and not do, etc. That dog was very well behaved.

Goes to show what dogs are really capable of. If you see dogs (or kids for that matter), who don't mind what they're told, the blame should be placed at the feet of the owners. Most people who own pets (or kids for that matter), don't have a clue how to discipline them! :frown:

How do you know that one dog wasn't blind either and was leading both of them? 😉
