Is obs project similar in value to camtasia? I'm not expecting it to be equal since it's free

I have only used it to record a FPS game but it can also do screen capture. You might have to do a little reading to figure out how to get it to do what you want. It can't be any harder than making music though.

I don't use it often, but when I have to record the screen I use CamStudio which is free. For games or anything that is DirectX rendered I use Fraps.

Another great tool for video editing and conversion is Freemake video convertor.
