Specialized bikes are SUPER OVERPRICED.

29ers are the way to go, and Trek makes the best ones (best geometry by a mile). See if you can get a used one since the 2011s just came out. If you have not ever ridden a 29er, ride one to see what I mean.

Fugi, Cannondale, GT, Specialized, etc. do not have the Trek geometry and cost similar or more. If this is the way you go, the brand is a literal no-brainer.

This is misinfo...they really aren't far out of the range of Scott, Giant, Trek. I picked up my bike as a left over 2010 Rockhopper Pro SL model for like 50% off the $1500 it originally sold for (hardtail).

For just a bike to tinker around with it's hard to go wrong in the $300-500 range today...lots of good values.

For more serious road and off road bikes around $750 and then $1200-1500 is the next jump...then things get crazy.
