I remember when I was elementary school we had school starting on the first Tuesday of September. School would then end on the 3rd Friday of June. I am remember them progressivism moving the school year earlier and ending earlier each few years.

It went from:
Start: First Tuesday of September; End: 3rd Friday of June
To:
Start: Last Monday of August; End: 2nd Friday of June
To
Start: 2nd To Last Monday of August; End: 1st Friday of June
To (This is what it was when I graduated HS):
Start: 3rd To Last Monday of August; End: Last Friday of May
To (This is what it is today):
Start: 1st Monday of August; End: 2nd Friday of May.

Seriously what is happening, do they want to get rid of summer break and just have a long spring break.

I don't know any schools in my area that start before september. Most schools start right after labor day or whatever that first holiday is in Sept.

I went to private school... if I remember right, we usually started the week after labor day and ended the last week in May.

as long as they're spending the same amount of time total in school, does it really matter?

In my hometown, they're starting school a month later than they used to. The claim is that the electricity to run the A/C in August is a huge expense. Starting school a month later apparently saves a lot of money. Obviously, they're ending school a month later too, but there was one extra long summer during the transition.
