The best thing Obama could do right now for all parties concerned, including the American public is to go to Congress for a new war resolution. The media is reporting that he intends to use the 2002 Iraq War resolution to fight ISIS. Get the whole process out in the open so that all the parties know the course of action. It will also put ISIS on notice of the resolve of the nation not just the President.

They are for whatever Obama isn't for. The republicans have no idea what their own opinions are besides the overreaching theme of "We hate Obama (yes because he's black)"

I agree, but for different reasons. Make Congress own the decision whether or not we go to war.

Agreed, as it's their constitutional responsibility. Then Obama must sign off on it to show his approval. His name needs to be on this as well.

And if Syria shoots down one of our planes...what then? We should stay out and confine our operations to Iraq (we owe them that)...nothing good can come from this.

If Syria acts to protect itself, that does not change anything in the long run. It just escalates or speeds up our action of toppling the Syrian government. Because even if we sit idly by WE are arming and supporting terrorists that will topple the government.

We enter Syria and the following events take place:

  • Syria must defend itself.
  • We must retaliate.
  • Russia must enter this war against us.

Mighty fine string of unwarranted assumptions & projections. Mighty fine indeed.

I have this feeling that toppling the Assad regime has been put on hold, maybe forever.

So he's going to violate Syrian sovereignty while lecturing Putin on violating Ukraine's?

So we have the authority to attack a sovereign nation if they interfere with our actions within their sovereign airspace and/or country. (Agreeing with senseamp)

When did Syria invite us in to battle ISIS?

And then a fit is thrown about Russia actions in Ukraine.

If a country asks for help via air strikes; we can provide it.
If a country asks for assistance on the ground, we can provide it.

We should not initiate wither of the above and also congress should provide approval for either actions.

Expansion of ground assistance should also require approval from Congress.

Whatever Obama is for, they're against. So he should claim he wants the exact opposite of what he really wants, then reluctantly give in to their demands.

Maybe that's already the strategy he's been using. Afterall, we managed to get the chemical weapons out of Syria without using any military force.

Hell, how about just make them do SOMETHING. Most useless fucking Congress in history.

sounds like the Dimocrats are very willing to send troops to fight a ground war, and sternly warn the syrians that if they shoot at our jets they will get blown up.

Fire up the dimocrat war machine boys! its time to start killing the brown people, AGAIN!!! WOOO HOOOO!

The Obama administration has threatened to destroy the Syrian government's air defenses if US warplanes flying missions to attack militants in Syria are targeted over the country's air space.

They protested elder Bush, they protested junior Bush but curiously, they did not protest Clinton and they most certainly will not protest Obama.

A resolution by its very nature would make Congress own the decision. But just as the left conveniently forgot Democrat participation in the last one, they will once again forget and focus only on Republican participation should there be a new one. It's a really cute game. But this one will have Obama's fingerprints on it so I'd say it ain't gonna happen. There's that legacy to think about...

You do know that he serves on the Armed Services Committee? I'm thinking not.

Still, for obvious reasons, access to intelligence gathered and whatever private negotiations are made at the presidential level are not something freely shared with Congress

Seems kind of crazy that they want to send US ground troops back into that mess we just extricated ourselves from.

Obama's critics would commit a crime and then blame Obama for not doing enough to catch them,.. just to whine about Obama.

Obama should have stayed out of Syria (which he did,.. congress had to tell him no and he listened to them,.. not like he invoked the WMD faires,..) and continue to stay out of that area,.. his latest efforts are foolish and disappointing.

Stay out - period.

sadly but this is a true statement. get the saudis, turks, jordanians, to take care of this problem, hell even back Assad i dont give a shit. what i do give a shit about is our continued unending combat roles in the mideast.

using the argument, "the boogy man may come get us" to get us involved in more armed conflict is old and played out.

Or work together with Assad to defeat terrorists.

I wouldn't even want that to happen.

Look at how Pakistan openly hid Osama Bin Laden - incompetence my ass,..; http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/pakistani-report-details-bin-ladens-life-hiding-v19361109

ME leadership is untrustworthy. Plenty of regimes smile in the US' face and then slip funds to various fanatical groups to wage their war on the west. Since they tolerate and support terrorism,.. let them deal with the consequences.

As long as there's a black man in the Oval Office, Republicans aren't for anything except getting him out.

and that is what scares me. I think Obama and the government is making a huge mistake that is going to drag us into another nasty war.
