Is there a significant difference between a refurbished laptop and a regular used laptop? I'm about to spend $300 on a Dell D600 refurbished laptop on eBay....

A D600 is a pile of garbage after a few years. I think you would be wiser to pony up another $100 and get a refurb right from Dell's Outlet. My 1720 was $420, IIRC.

What about a new Vostro laptop? Are they good? I don't like laptops. I'm just getting one because I need one for work. I want to spend the least amount of money on a decent laptop.

depends how old.
you never know part is near failing on a lappy after long use..they get carried around and knocked about so are more prone to failure. and replacing parts is more difficult.

D600s are junk. I have a D610 at work, but another associate has a D600. The difference is huge! The D600 always has problems, and it is slow. Wireless breaks, LAN breaks...

Oh, I see you just bought it.

I got a 1720 from their outlet store and it was $900 shipped

3GB RAM, 17" 1440x900 screen, 250GB HDD, 256MB 8600M GT video card...

Yeah. Now I feel like I just wasted $300.... DAMN.

Or maybe I'll be the lucky guy whose D600 is actually good..

Yeah, mine was a bit more ghetto ;). I also used a 20% off coupon.

2GB ram, 1440x900, truelife, 160GB HDD, onboard intel graphics. The 9 cell battery rocks, though. I can get 6-7 hours if I am conservative.

I bought a refurbed XPS notebook a while ago on ebay. Came with 1 year warranty, never gave me problems when I had it.

Dell outlet laptops are usually fine - no worse than new anyway.

I've bought a XPS 1730 there and saved about $2000, the thing runs like a champ and looks like new.

it really depends from person to person and their perspective toward buy things. Some people just tend invest their money in the best way possible (aka buying things new). Really depends on you man.

If you are on a poor mans budget, which most of us are, than refurbished laptops is a good way to go. Refurbished laptops are as Good As New with factory warranty included.
I have never had any major big issues with refurbished laptops and I own and use a few of them.

From what I know about the Dell D600 they have had a few issues with the hard drives giving out on them pretty quickly. Dell just was not putting very good hard drives in them for a while in the past.

But anyway you might have bought a D600 with a newer/better hard drive. Overall it really is not that bad of a notebook. There are a lot worst ones out there.

By the way I hope you did get a warranty with it?
