I have a raptor drive and when it's doing a lot of work (ripping a dvd image, copying a large file) it is extremely loud. Is this right?

Not sure about the "extremely loud" but it does make quite a bit of racket when reading/writing. It should be quiet at idle though.

During idle is it pretty quiet. However, under load it is by far the loudest thing in my comp. I just wanted to know if I got a deffective drive or if this is the cost of a 10,000rpm drive. It seems like this is just part of having a raptor.

Well if it makes those sounds (crackling noise) while the HDD activity LED is blinking in synch with the noise then it's normal. Yes they are loud compared to a seagate :)

I was shocked by how quiet the Raptor is I have the first version the 36 gig and my boss has the 72 gig version. 72 gig version is even quieter. It will not bother you at all go for it if you want the fastest SATA Drive out there. they Rock!
