Are RAMs downward compatible?

I have a friend using a HP computer and wants to add more RAM inside... If I'm not wrong he's using 2x128 MB SDRAM. I can only buy the same type of ram right? not ddr or anything else?
 
Yuck @ SDRAM. They're so expensive anymore and they suck horridly. Do your friend a favor and buy him a new system. 😉
 
It's an old system... 1.8Ghz. But I don't think he's interested in a new system. Do single sided and double sided work together?
