Are radio plays supposed to be so terrible?

So my local rap station turns all stupid in the morning, and has this gospel oriented morning show. In that show, they have this 10 minute radio play, which is like a soap opera, keeps on going and going and going. My grandmother told me that back when they used to listen to plays on the radio, they were very well acted, you could just imagine everything that was going on. But not this play. It sucks so bad, that it's not even funny. Over acting is rampant, not a single character sounds genuine, everything seems made up and fake. What in the world?
