newegg has maxtor "quiet drive" 40 gig 7200 rpm on sale for $89-- and the "non-quiet" drive for $80

are quiet drives actually quieter? i guess there's some kind of ball bearing deal...not sure.

anyone know about these so-called "quiet" drives? or has one?

thanks

you didn't give a model # so here's what i dug up

Conclusion

Again, our review sample features ball rather than fluid bearings. Even so, this D740X is quiet when idle. Though it can't quite compare to the Seagate Barracuda ATA IV (all of which ship with fluid bearings), idle noise should be undetectable in all but the quietest systems. A sample equipped with fluid bearings may exhibit an even lower noise floor. As one would expect from a drive that delivers a best-of-class access time, the D740X is relatively loud when it comes to seeks? a definite notch above what we've witnessed from today's competition. Note that one can mitigate this noise through the use of Maxtor's Acoustic Management utility. When it comes to heat, even after extended use, the drive gets only warm to the touch.

edit below;)
you have to manually select the maxtor ata 133 drive sorry:eek:
i know this isn't quite what you needed but it does point out 2 things

first that they haven't tested the fluid drives for maxtor (i don't own one by the way)

second the drive that they compared it was the seagate so i am assuming that that would the quietest harddrive

my maxtor by the way isn't loud at all by the way and its over2 1/2 years old lol

hope this helps;)
