Anyone know? I've read some place that it doesn't qualify as a firearm.

Firearms are not illegal. Nor is a potato cannon. What you do with them determines legality.

<< Don't let anyone tell you Firearms are illegal to own. >>

No, but firing them within city limits without being an authority, at a licensed weapon range, or in an extreme situation is illegal. So why would you want one to begin with?

YAY! I GOT THIS COOL TOY!
Cool, what does it look like when you launch it into someone's windshield and shoot it at people?
I HAVE NO IDEA, BUT IT'S A COOL TOY.

I dont know, I had a big old field behind my house when I was younger and we used apples :) some junk apple trees

anyway, illegal? I doubt it if you dont fire it where your supposed to, I doubt the cops will come busting down my door because the gophers in the field are complaining.... but the noise could be an issue, that and the 3 feet of blue flame shooting out the end..... hehe I miss a spud gun

*interesting point*

The pipe i used on mine was the proper size so that I could stick a "big slam" cap down it and fill it with whatever :) pea gravel makes it into a deadly shotgun (which you can tear a coffe can to pieces with) and if you fill it completely up with old tomotates from your garden and it will knock you on your butt :) (incredible kickback)

mine looked like this

ok so drawing it when you cant have spaces in html just doesnt work
I stuck the igniter right there in the handle and the wires went up to the back of the chamber, which could be screwed off...., so it worked just like a trigger :)

IANAL, but I have read the ATF books

Under US Federal law, potato cannons are not firearms.

Some states have particularly irritating regs - MA used to regulate them as firearms, because MA regulates EVERYTHING! (Posession of a single BB could land you a year in jail. No kidding)

This changed in 1998, now legal in MA.

However, all this is moot as long as you don't get caught. Further, although technically illegal, most cops really won't care unless you've just used it to shoot some little old lady crossing the street and forcing her under the wheels of a pulp truck.

Just my take

welll..... it really depends what you do with it... from my perspective... yes.... from yours... it depends... three tips... avoid hills in suburban areas... always know what's over that copse of trees... and shopping mall parking lots are never good firing ranges... even late at night... especially late at night...
