are politicians intelligent?

It seems like to me you can get away with being a politician if you're popular, maniplulative, good looking and have political views, also you need patience. It seems like the people who make the decisions on important issues generally know jack-nothing about them and usually choose things that 'seem right' or what will get them elected again instead of what is right or what's good for the overall picture. You will infact be smacked by a trout if you insinuate that this thread belongs in P&N.

Sure, they've found the best-paying scam with the least amount of work. It's like being a lawyer, but with shorter hours and less accountability.

= social intelligent, beeing able to understand how people "work", also beeing willing to take a stand even though it seems extremely stupid

Entirely more intelligent than you, Goku.

Also you have to be somewhat of a dunce, well guess that can be taken for granted, in thinking you can identify somebody's intelligence by their chosen profession.

I'd say overall, yes. Though I think there are many situations where they speak of things of which they have no true knowledge, then they sound like morons.

From all that I've seen of most "top level" officials like senators and congresscritter, most of the are actually very intelligent. Some of the ideas that they come up with are brilliant. The problem is that most "intelligent" bills get shot down because they don't work with the current system. All you ever hear on TV are the stupid bills or the controversial bills. I think the media parlays this opinion of stupidity in our officials which is totally unfair.

Note, this excludes W, he well and truly is an idiot.

Further note. Be serious about this, how often do you say something totally stupid in a day? 2, 5, 10 times a day? Now imagine everytime you did it was recorded and blasted out into 200 million americans homes. Not everything people say makes it into the headline news, just the funny parts.

Because "doing what's right" usually does not get one elected (or re-elected), despite protestation to the contrary from the general public.

Ex.: Right now, the federal gov't is running huge budget deficits, and has done so for most of the past 30+ years. The 'right thing' would be to balance the budget, but since the solution (either raising tax or cutting spending, or both) is political suicide, we've gotten deficits more times than not.

that's precisely the problem of making a career out of being a poiltician - you make choices that appease your support group so you can be re-elected, instead of getting something done that will actually benefit society on a local/state/national scale.
