I have had a Plextor CDRW for a while now and I was wondering if they are very noisy. The model # is PX-W4012TA, its a 40-12-40 internal drive. The damn thing sounds like a low octive hair dryer. Do any of you have this one and is it noisy for you also?

I think they are all noisy at high speeds because manufacturers can't use a "loose" central grip on the CD-R because they need precise tracking for the writing.

What's the noise like at say 16X or 8X write speed? I seriously doubt anyone would notice the minute or so it takes longer to write...

My 24x Plextor is pretty loud, but not THAT loud. The CD trey is slow as hell, though.

I have had models from Creative, Acer and now Plextor and this is by far the loudest I have had. Everytime it starts to spin its like annoying as hell.

Man, why do people complain about noise from their computer?? I don't mind at all. Just get you some fans for your case and you won't even notice any optical drive spinning CDs up and down. Or, just get these bad boys and all your troubles will go away.

I was asking cause I want to know if its a possible problem with it, not because I am running around going crazy from the noise.

I think they all may be louder than previous years (lower speeds). My lite-on 32x is way louder than the 8x Plextor it replaced.

OK. Seriously, if it's as loud as you're describing it to be (hmm, that's a pretty sh!tty sentence), then something may be wrong. So is your burner really that loud?

Also, as mentioned on this thread, the faster you burn, the "louder" your drive seems. Try burning at 12X... is your burner still loud?

I havent even used it to burn its just loud when it runs the cd's. I have sent and email to Plextor to see what they say. My friend here has 2 different Plextor models and they arent loud, but his are also alot older.

Well, considering that your Plextor is a 40X CD-ROM as well... it'll be noticable when your Plexy spins up some CDs. I wouldn't really worry about it. You'll get used to it.

Every time you put a CD in your Plextor, just close your eyes and wait for the spin up... imagine that you're in the cockpit of a fighter jet (or something).

The Plextor 32x reader (not CDRW) I had was the noisiest drive I've ever owned. Funny how that thing whirred, whined and wobbled when the Ricoh 8x4x32 CDRW it was mated with was and still is almost silent, even when it spins up to it's fastest speed it does it with a gentle whiiiir.

The Plextor 20x reader I replaced the 32x with is much quieter, but still not as quiet as the Ricoh. Both Plextors had problems with motor noise bleeding into the CD audio out as well.

Others have said theirs are perfect. From what I've seen, Plextor's good, but way overrated. Notice I already said good, but "good" doesn't deserve the god like admiration their stuff gets. Wonder if other Ricohs are as quiet as mine or if I got lucky there.

My 12x10x32 Plextor is very quiet both reading at 32x and writing at 12x. Don't know about 40x. At 40x CD spins at different speeds for outer and inner tracks. That may be the reason it's noisy.
