Her excuse for turning on the fan (when it's nearly freezing outside) is that is reduces the humidity. I've never heard that one before. :)

lol if anything it makes the hvac work harder. The air that is being removed from the house needs to be replaced somehow... that is going to be cold outside air which needs to be warmed up. Winter usually means a very dry house.

It's not just a few lights - the OP said fan and laptop too. It might be insignificant on 1 day, but do it over the long run, it adds up.
but still...

#1 -- the OP doesn't even live there
#2 -- it's super rude to go into someone else's private area and mess with their crap

if the OP's friend felt like it was a major issue, it's the friend's responsibility to raise the issue with the roommate and demand that the roommate pay a higher portion of the utility bill if they refuse to change their ways. the OP should stay out of the issue and stop being a busybody.

Now I'm not a tree hugging, eco-friendly hippy, but I try to reduce waste. Especially waste that ends up costing me like electricity.

So I have a friend who constantly leaves fans, lights, and laptops on. Her and her sister live together and she gets absolutely mad when her sister tells her to turn off the lights. I go over their frequently and occasionally need to use the bathroom upstairs where her room is. I go to use it and see the friend's fan, lamp, laptop, bathroom light, and closet light on all while she is gone for an hour or two at some meeting. I turn everything off except the laptop, and she starts bitching when she gets home and finds out. What is wrong with her? What's the need of having a closet light on when you are gone for two hours?

What's wrong with being a tree hugging eco-friendly hippy?

I'm not defending the OP touching other people's shit. It's up to the people that are actually living there to sort it out.

That is true, but I don't know enough about this person's lifestyle to say much else outside of the specific occurence the OP described.

She lets me use her restroom... Turning off a light, is touching someone's shit? I better tell my friend to stop flushing the toilet when he comes over cause he didn't ask me to touch my stuff.

going into your friend's roommate's bedroom to turn off her lights, laptop, fan, etc is touching someone's shit.

Agreed, but fortunately I didn't do that.
the friend's fan, lamp, laptop, bathroom light, and closet light on all while she is gone for an hour or two at some meeting. I turn everything off

so, you went into her room and turned off her fan, lamp, bathroom light, and opened up the closet to turn that light off as well?

I agree with most posters here...if shes paying her portion of the bill who cares...it is her stuff and she is allowed to do as she pleases, end of story.

Could be worse. I was working on a paper, and for whatever reason, a friend of my roommates decided it would be a great idea to go through all the switches of the circuit breaker and flip them... I was pretty annoyed.

When I came out and asked "What are you doing!" he got this dumb look on his face and said "I didn't know you were here. Sorry."

Who the hell flips circuit breakers just for the heck of it? I must have sounded ticked because I could here him talking with my roommate "Well, he uses a laptop, right? ... Why not, he should be using a laptop!"

You left out the part where I was using the bathroom. I have to walk through her room to get into her bathroom, which has a closet attached to it.

What about leaving the faucets running all day (not full gush but more than a drip)? My roommate leaves the sink running sometimes and even after telling him many times he doesn't care because water and utilities are covered by rent.

Being an old fart that was raised by people who grew up in the depression I learned to be very thrifty (<--understatement). My kids were the focus of my ire every time that they did something wasteful. Now, that my son has been living in an investment property of ours I find him giving me shit if I leave a light on and walk out of a room. :) My daughter, on the other hand, is a work in progress.

The most inconsiderate person in this thread is the OP. If someone turned off my stuff, including the lights in my personal space, I would be pissed off. Leave it alone, stop being a busy body.

Is she at least using CFLs?

If not, you should go swap them out next time you are over there. I just want to see what her reaction would be, lol.
