Now I'm not a tree hugging, eco-friendly hippy, but I try to reduce waste. Especially waste that ends up costing me like electricity.

So I have a friend who constantly leaves fans, lights, and laptops on. Her and her sister live together and she gets absolutely mad when her sister tells her to turn off the lights. I go over their frequently and occasionally need to use the bathroom upstairs where her room is. I go to use it and see the friend's fan, lamp, laptop, bathroom light, and closet light on all while she is gone for an hour or two at some meeting. I turn everything off except the laptop, and she starts bitching when she gets home and finds out. What is wrong with her? What's the need of having a closet light on when you are gone for two hours?

It's not really your stuff to touch IMO. If she wants to leave all that shit on and is willing to pay the electric bill when it comes in, whatever. Is it inconsiderate? Yes. Is it also her right? Yes.

Probably had parents rich enought not to have to worry about the power bill. Yes, it is inconsiderate if you in any way are responsible for paying for her bad habit of leaving stuff on.

This

It may not be considerate, but it's also none of your damn business.

If I lived with her, she'd be paying a higher percentage of the utility bill. That's horseshit, that she expects her sister to subsidize her wasteful lifestyle. That's like going out to eat and getting a salad, while your partner gets steak and lobster, and then expects to just split the bill when it comes.

It's not really inconsiderate as much as irresponsible. But, electricity is cheap and a lot of people don't really care.

It may be stupid of her, but you making this non sense post complaining about her is wasting electricity too.

Some girls like to have lights on when they heave because they don't want to come back to a dark apartment/house at night if they go out. A couple of my friends are like this, they know its wasteful but dont mind/care about the increased utility bills

My thoughts as well...though there is always pepper spray and other more nasty things for personal protection.

the marginal amount the electricity bill increases by leaving a light or two on probably doesn't bother her.

irresponsible but not necessarily inconsiderate. I also frequently leave a light or two on in my house even when I'm not there just so I'm not fumbling around in the dark when I get home.

you were probably out of line entering her bedroom and messing with her stuff.

She sounds crazy. I bet she could cut like 50 bucks per month on her bill with minimum change to her lifestyle. If she hates having to manually turn the lights on/off she should get sensor switches with a timer. I've actually considered that for my house. It's cool to just walk around and everything turns on. :D

People like this drive up EVERYONE's power bill, not just theirs. Wasteful people really piss me off, as well as folks who defend it by saying its no one else's business. Thanks for fighting the good fight OP.

When people use MORE electricity, the utilities scream about increased demand...and raise prices.

When people use LESS electricity, the utilities scream about not having enough revenue to meet costs...and raise prices.

I've had two roommates that will leave for class (they'll leave at 9 and be gone to about 4PM), and they'd actually leave their TVs or radios going in their rooms. What in the world is the point in that? o_O

I know a bunch of women who always leave stuff on. They just like it that way. Their response is always something like "it makes the home feel warmer, more alive."

The way I see it...who cares. It's her house; she can do whatever she wants.

This still happens when her sister and other people are downstairs watching TV, so it's not like she leaves them on because she is scared when returning...although that is a legit concern.

Also, I did live with her the past semester, but I didn't say anything because I didn't want to cause any drama. Her and the other roommate (not the sister) were the best roommates I've had.

The rich parents thing doesn't make any sense since the sister is very good when it comes to turning off lights and bitches about people leaving them.

Her excuse for turning on the fan (when it's nearly freezing outside) is that is reduces the humidity. I've never heard that one before. :)

You can leave lights on without leaving everything on.

What are you doing in other people's rooms (and in what appears to not be your home), touching their stuff, while they are not there?

That seems a lot more inconsiderate than leaving a few lights on for a 1-2 hours and using insignificantly more electricity than usual.

It's not just a few lights - the OP said fan and laptop too. It might be insignificant on 1 day, but do it over the long run, it adds up.
