It would be pretty damn cool if something spectacular really happen on Dec 21st 2012. It's the end of time/end of world according to the Mayan calender. Quite frankly I don't have much to lose right now in life. I wouldn't mind trading it in for the spectacle of end of world and finally an ancient prophecy comes true.

I really want to see some ancient history breakthrough during my life time.
My most wanted list:
Atlantis!
Hall of records in Egypt
Noah's Ark
The real tomb for Qin Shi Huangdi (China's first emperor)
Some relics of the Statue of Zeus and/or Colossus of Rhodes

If the world did end on 12/12/12, it sure would fsck a lot of peoples realities up.. Not that it would matter at that point, I guess.. 😛
 
wouldn't it be unfortunate if something disastrous happened on dec. 11, 2012? mayans wouldn't seem so cool then, would they?
it'd be like, "sure, the mayans were a great civilization and built those cool pyramids and pillaged those smaller tribes dwelling in the outskirts, but they couldn't quite predict the end of the world, could they? buncha losers."
 
I'd say that it would worry me more if a society that didn't collapse under its own weight was making predictions.

I'd love it, but I don't expect anything to happen. Though the animals... erm, "Muslims" may well nuke us at some point, I don't believe in clairvoyance to predict it.

It seems to come along every couple of years that some group's prediction comes and goes. Eventually some one will be right, or will be close enough (some big disaster within a month of their date) to cause a ruckus.

The 2000 "prediction" doesn't really have much basis. If you look at the sophistication of the Mayan astrology, you really have to give this date some credit. The pole shift is going to happen in 2012? It doesn't really have to be the end of the world. Just something significant enough to prove the Mayan will be grand.
The world we live in now is so dull compare to the good old days. Industrial revolution really takes away a lot of the mystic of human civilization.

It's 12/21/12. And it's not necessarily the end of the world according to the Mayans, just the end of the "long count" calendar. It's the galactic alignment, where the winter solstice sun will be aligned with the center of the galaxy. The sun on that day will be aligned exactly with the center of the Milky Way on that night. This happens once every 26,000 years.

The arrangement of the numbers of any calendar is purely arbitrary. As far as I am concerned, the universe came into existence approximately 8 months, 1 day, and 35 years ago. Your opinion of that may differ.
 
I can't wait. I can't wait to laugh when the world keeps frickin turning and they're all left standing there wondering what happened to their nutty end times belief.

I laughed on the millennium, I laughed on y2k, and I'm going to continue laughing until I die of old age, because I just know that people are going to keep thinking that the end is near.
