Yea it always amazes me the same people in Gov that scream cars need to get better gas milage and emmisons are the ones pushing for things like this that only add more weight to a car and hurts it.

I think it is overkill and a waste of money.

i remember VW promoting its pedestrian safe hood in a commercial not too long ago.
also the GT-R has a hood that pops up upon impact with a pedestrian, also mandated by european safety standards.
apparently, volvo is developing a pedestrian detection system.

are pedestrian accidents that big of a problem over there?
It just means you need to drive faster so the jaywalkers die instead of being put in a vegetable state.

I am more concerned about mandating pedestrian friendly bumpers and allowing those bumper guards on civilian cars... wtf...

Pedestrian hits are a big issue in major cities. It happens all the time. I'm all for cars having design elements to increase pedestrian safety when a hit does occur. From what I understand the hood popping up mechanism is required for the GTR to meet the standards. It's not the hood of a car must pop up to meet the standard, but for the GTR that is how the designers chose to implement it. Presumably because it was easier, more cost effective, quicker (or whatever) than reshaping the car.

regardless, all these safety systems being imposed on manufacturers is adding weight, complexity and cost.

i'll just run those stupid fuckers over.
