Although I won't deny that Americans are not very good at geography (in general), I have found that most other countries make an equal amount of mistakes, just in a different way. I have friends in Europe that were shocked that we had trees in California for example. They thought the whole state was just one big metropolitan area covered in skyscrapers. I don't think most people, regardless of which country they're from, understand how big the USA is (or Canada and Russia for that matter). I don't think most people understand how small the Atlantic is compared to the Pacific so you get a lot of talk about people in California going to Europe over the Pacific. Americans on the other hand can't point out the small countries of Europe at all and mix up Sweden and Switzerland which is just embaressing.
