Are optical mice by logitech supposed to leave their light on?

Just bought one last night, the blue one a step below the vibrating one. When I connect it via PS/2, the red light stays on even when I turn off the computer. When I hook it up via USB, the light goes off when windows shuts down.

Is this what is supposed to happen?

When your computer is totally off! If the power supply fan is off you aren't getting any power to your computer. Maybe the mouse was running off the system battery! I didn't think that was possible. The light should turn off.

When ATX PSU's are off, they still send power out. THis is why it is a bad idea to take ram out etc. while the PSU is off but plugged in.

ATX PSU's always send power to the mouse and keyboard even when off but plugged in. This is how keyboaord wakeup is achieved.

Is it bad for the mouse to have the light on 24/7 then? Will it "burn" out?

If not I will put it back in the PS/2 slot to free up a USB.

I have the blue optical mouse (usb), and the light turns off when the computer is off.

Yeah.. when it is plugged into the USB port the light goes off, but try it in the PS/2 port and it will stay on...

It is a LED. If left on 24/7 it would last upwards of 50 years. Depends on the exact LED and the specs, but... dont worry about it.

Yeah, my Logitech Optical Mouseman's blue light stays on when it's plugged into the PS2 port but stays off when plugged into the USB port. I think my MS Natural Elite keyboard's caplock and numlock lights stay on too when the computer is off. Doesn't bother me though, helps me find the computer when I wake up in the middle of the night with a CS craving.

This happens on some systems but not all. On my Abit BE6 my light would stay on after shutting down the computer. On my Abit KT7E the light shuts off as well (this is of course on PS/2. With USB it'll shutoff on either system).

My microsoft optical intellimouse light always stays on, but then again I always leave the computer on... :)

They're leds though, I have a led from a compaq that's 4 years old and has been used hard up to this day, and it still works...

LEDs last a long time. 50 years is a good estimate for 24/7 usage.

I would go with USB anyway. I have the Microshaft's Intelli exploder and it functions better or is more responsive when it's plugged in to a USB port. Why even bother with ps/2.....unless of course you reinstall windows, then you need that ps/2 port. Otherwise, just go with USB.
