Are Opterons still worth it?

they've gone up in price by about $70 recently (the 146s at least). now, a 3200 can be found for cheaper than a 144, and since the 3200 has the higher multiplier, it might even OC better.

what do you think?

If overclocking, they are. If not, no. Especially with the latest batch of 165s at least, you almost have a guaranteed 300mhz FSB overclock.

bump, i want to know if a 10x mult. is better than a higher average FSB OC, A64s are not that bad at OCing anyway

I would take the higher FSB with a lower multi...and all of my non-Opty chips have performed better in this configuration. The memory bandwidth is higher in this configuration but I have noticed that the Disk I/O seems to be slightly lower in syn benchmarks...JMO

They're getting a tad expensive now. Might as well save up and go quad core!

As you can see from my profile, I got a dual core cpu and its not the multitasking beast people say it is. That or my RAM is to blame. Or some other component in my system..

need a good hdd and lotsa ram for multitasking lots

but even then...two cores will do so much

its a "beast" when compared to single core, is most likely what you're hearing

I think they are as good of a deal as ever, you just have to be on the lookout for a good price, since they change so quickly. I just received my 144 retail, and it cost me $150 shipped. As far as single core goes, I can't think of much better than a chip that will likely overclock past 2.7ghz with a meg of cache for $150. I would need at least an Athlon 64 3700+ at that price before I gave up the Opteron. That said, the reason to buy the Athlon 64 is if you need a chip "right now" since Opteron's move in and out of stock.
