Are older burners better than newer burners?

A friend of mine was telling me that older burners are actually better because they have the capability to "copy" anything. Newer burners are more restrictive. Can anyone verify this? where can I find more info on this subject?

thx!

I know the plextor 8/20 drive could do copy discs that were protected using SD 2.0 while most others couldn't

It depends on what you call "better"... If what you call better is slower burn times but more ability to pirate software than sure they're better. But if you call better much faster burn times with *less* ability to break laws, then the new ones are better. I also don't like how newer drives are tending to try and trick you with their high advertised burn speeds while they don't actually burn at that speed all the time...

It's not a trick, they simply had to move to CLV (other than Yamaha and its P-CAV).

what do you mean they don't burn as fast as they advertise? 24x does not really burn at 24x speed? kinda like HDDs? outer disk is faster than inner disk?

what's CLV and CAV?

I have LG 4X2X24.

Will be getting a Liteon 24X10X40 for $85 shipped.

I can't resist that.

Even if I don't get max burn speed, still will be better than 4x.
