Are old records worth anything?

My great uncle recently passed away and he gave my dad two huge crates of records...lots of good ones. I'm just curious though, I'd rather hang them on my wall than sell 'em.

Some rare albums in excellent condition are collectible and will probably only go up in value so long as you keep them in good condition.

There are books you can buy that lists most albums and their value based on condition. I'm sure Amazon has a couple of them for sale.

A few here and there are. One of my friends is selling off his record collection piece by piece. A lot of 12 Santana albums went for $10. One colored vinyl album from the Plasmatics went for $10.50. I myself may be interested in some of them.

 

If you catalog them and send me a list, I would probably be interested in purchasing some.
I collect vinyl.

I'm going to decorate the studio I'm building in my new house with mine. Should look cool. Good condition albums go for $10-$30 on ebay.

I'm thinking of doing the same, but just doing a border around the top of the room with them. I'd like to have it done solely with picture discs, colored vinyl and such.

I have some original metal masters of three Beatles albums pressed on colored vinyl under the Apple record label. They are worth hundreds of dollars each. The Red album, White album and the Blue album.

Have a bunch of old LP's myself. Love 'em. Picked up most of them for a buck or two a piece at used shops or garage sales. Of course, I actually listen to my LP's. IMO they aren't worth a damn thing if all they do is sit there and never get played.

Alot of those are probably a dime a dozen. It really has to fall into a few categories to be worth much..

a) UK Pressings of early British Stuff on oddity labels can be collectible.
b) Promos and Demos
c) Colored Vinyl, if it's limited pressings
d) Mispressings - Sometimes batches of records would be released with tracks that were in wrong sequence. Those are pretty collectible.

I'm assuming most of yours could be had for a few bucks apiece, if it's in good shape. Also, remember if you're looking up albums on Ebay, don't get overtly excited for two reasons.
Ebay market fluctuates, and most won't sell for the same price. Also, if you see one of your listed for a high price, don't forget the album you have maybe a later pressing, on a different label, or many other various factors.

afaik the pressing is one of the most important factors in their value (besides condition). first pressings can be worth a lot while later pressings are worth nothing. i would go to a bookstore and buy a book that can help you identify what might be worth a lot.
