Are Oil Stabilizers good?

Just curious what you guys think of this stuff? My dad was told by his mechanic friend to use that particular product in his car, which is a 92 camry wagon I4 with 450,000 km on it.

Myself I have a 2001 Lexus ES 300 with 120,000 km on it, I use synthetic oil.

EDIT: Should I use some in my car also?

If it survived this long without any additives, I would imagine that it will keep on going just fine as it is. If he has been using this stuff for awhile, then keep dong it.

Hmm yea, he just added it a few weeks ago when he changed his oil. Do you think I should use it in my car?

No.

Its the same as STP oil treatment, etc... All it does is thicken the oil up. So if you want thicker oil then just buy thicker oil. Don't buy 5w30 and add this to get 15w40, just buy 15w40 and cut out the middle man.

Or better yet just use 5w30 year round and worry about real problems.

Hmm yea? It doesn't say anywhere there that it increase viscosity, wouldn't that be dangerous to some engines?

Snake oil. It helps nothing. If you're already using synthetic oil, that's as good as it gets.

i pick up lucas fuel additive or BG 44k mainly, once in a while i see that luca oil additive on sale and i pick up the bottle. Its like $6 a quart and i use all whenever i change my oil. It hardly costs me anything and i dont think it does anything great but i still use it. It doesn't HURT the car by any means. But i do agree that the higher quaility fully SYN oil have what Luca's offers already mixed into their oils.

I run mobil 5000 oil every 3k. Its not top of the line but its a cheaper priced Dino oil that i like.

I use Quaker State 5w30 full synthetic. Think I should add some?

No, unless you car is leaking/burning oil at a fast pace. And if so then use a thicker reg. oil. If not just use syn 5w30 and change every 10k or so.

Hmm 10 k? Miles or KM? My manual says to change oil every 8 k km, but that's regular oil not synthetic...

It's crap and it causes foaming. You can see the effects here. The short answer is that no, you should not use it. Period.

Yea I saw that foam test too, it's the only negative test I could find on the product. Online I've found a bunch of people saying their mechanics live by it. My dads mechanic friend said he uses it religiously.

It's also the only objective test you can find.

The only oil additive I would consider is molybdenum disulfide. Otherwise, stay away.
