Just wondering...

How do places like Burger King manage to make their burgers so unhealthy..

By me buying some 85% lean or such beef from the store and making a burger with some lettuice and tomato am I getting the same 1000 calories that I would if I bought a burger king version?

bad for you? why would a hamburger be bad for you?

unless you don't cook it and get ecolie (sp?) and die, beef its what's for dinner ;)

most of the fat cooks off, so it doesn't really matter if you get cheap ground beef (70% lean) or the expensive stuff (90%) lean, you end up with the same amound of fat after cooking it (consumer reports did a full study and came to this conclusion several years ago)

eat your beef!!!
*edit*
oh, the fast food burgers do have a crap load of sodium (but the "Salt is bad for you myth" is a whole seperate story, don't get me started :) ) , if you season your own ground beef without a lot of salt, that shouldn't be an issue

85/15 blend is pretty fatty, you should be able to get a 90/10 or even a 93/7 for a few cents more per pound.

I would be surprised that the fast food places use 85/15, I would think they would use 70/30 (Yuk!).

Ok, when heated fat turns to liquid, I'd rather have a McD's burger that is cooked so dry that there probably isn't very much fat left in it than the thick juicy burgers I make at home (mine taste way better, but more than once every few months is asking for trouble IMO)

Also, fast food places slather mayonnaise or other sauces on their burgers, and they cook their patties for only a short amount of time, so the fat doesn't have time to run out of the meat.

fast food burgers are worse b/c they use fatty beef, and are loaded with cheese, mayo, bacon etc.

The reason they're so unhealthy is because they want it to taste good. And everything in this world that tastes good is unhealthy :D

not to mention fast food burgers use the worst quality meat allowed by law. The cows are all hopped up on drugs and hormones and who knows what.

Fast food is poison.

burgers from the store better cuz you can choose the quality beef you are buying if you want to.

They are not exactly "bad" for you, but one may have more Cholesterol, Sodium, total Saturated fat, that aren't exactly healthy for you. If you were to eat the burgers more often than not, then it could work it's way into being "bad"!

But to answer your original question, burgers from a non-fast food joint, may be better depending on the fat content, but that also depends on whether or not the person that makes them wants to save money and go for the 70% lean type.

I dunno, but I love a good burger!

i believe whole foods burgers are made from cattle raised without antibiotics(and other goodies) in their diet. that's where we buy our meat.

not sure about fast food burgers.

i've been wondering about the same question too. As for me, I bought Sam's Club 1/4 pounder burger pack and according to its nutritional fact, one 1/4 lb burger( a serving) contain around 280 calories in which 200 come from fat.

The way i cook them is by frying with no oil or grilled.

80/20 is supposed to be the ideal ratio for burgers. If you get beef that's too lean, the burger will fall to pieces; too fat and you're just eating unnecessary fat. Sorry...don't have a source on this but remember reading it not long ago.

Bingo. It's getting to the point where we can't eat anything because it's been proven to be unhealthy. George Costanza summed it up perfectly:

JERRY: So what are you getting?

GEORGE: I don?t know, I can?t eat. You, you can?t have anything anymore. Look at this, look at this. Eggs: out. Coffee: out. French fries: out. BLT: out! I go to visit my grandparents: they're eatying three big brisket sandwiches, I?m sittin? here with a carrot! They?re closing in on a hundred, I?m sayin? to them, ?How can you eat that stuff??

Generally, the more convenient the food item is to prepare, the less healthy it is.
