Are Nokia N1 or N3 headsets "special"?

I like Plantronics headsets, but always looking for a bargain, I noticed some made for specific devices are often cheap on fleabay, example being ones for the Nokia N2 and N3, but the plug looks kind of normal 3.5mm. Are there special things about the headsets for Nokia N1 or N3, or is it maybe just the control portion of the headset for answering calls etc?

I'd like to use the headset both with a Nokia 5310 phone, but mostly with my generic laptop headset adapter.
