Are new iPods coming out soon?

I currently have a 30 GB Zune, and while I love it, I want more space.

I would be interested in the 80 GB iPod, but I first want to see how close we might be to a revised model being released. I can certainly wait since I do have a mp3 player at the moment.

There are rumors that the next gen (widescreen + touch screen) will come out in august, but it's nothing more than rumors right now.

Such a device would almost have to occupy another SKU, I just can't see a device like that going for 250-300 usd.

I don't really see the point in a touch screen iPod. Widescreen is nice though.

i was looking over at the macrumors forums and everyone keeps saying "august 7" so i guess that is the date people are hoping they announce new iPods or something along those lines.

a 100+ GB iPod would be nice :D

If you love Zune, wait til this holiday season. There will be an updated version with bigger HDD.

Perhaps even that long rumored Flash Zune.

Maybe us Zune owners could hope for a nice firmware upgrade by then too.

Same place as on the iPhone, on the touchscreen? Isn't that the point of a touchscreen? I don't like the idea and think it's stupid. But it's what people are asking for in some Mac forums apparrently.

I like to change songs on my zune without looking at it. Kind of hard to do with a touchscreen. I prefer actual buttons on a phone and an mp3 player. Touchscreen would just add unnecessary extra cost.

To me the major benefit of a touchscreen is a packaging one - it allows the entire face of the device to be a screen. The iPod could be even better than the iPhone in that respect, in that it doesn't need a speaker, microphone, and Home button. It might not be a bad idea to have redundant play/pause/rewind/ffwd buttons on the top, though.

If they added redundant buttons then I'd be sold. They don't even need to be large buttons. Perhaps on the side even. Although I'd still be worried of how the touchscreen would raise the price of the player.

There was a story on Engadget recently that covered an Apple patent for a device with a screen on the front and controls on the back. I had actually talked with some friends about a similar idea some time ago. In any event I think this would be a great way around the screen real estate problem while keeping the device small. I wouldn't think you would have to be looking at the buttons to use them and one entire side could be the screen. No need for a touch screen interface.

"Our source from inside the the hallowed halls of Microsoft gave us some fresh leaks on the next generation Zune. He indicated the codename is "Scorpio", big brother to the flash based Zune code named "Draco". The source indicated the storage capacity is 80GB for Scorpio. We challenged that and asked if he was sure there would be no 100 or 120 GB Zune. The answer was blunt: "No, it will be 80". Perhaps the most exciting news is that mass production of Scorpio will begin at the very end of July. Currently all Scorpios and Dracos at Zune headquarters are pre-production units. The only timeline we have for launch is that Draco and Scorpio will be ready for the 2007 holidays. The source gave no info on a European launch, or other key questions, even when enhanced interrogation techniques were applied.

The original Zune was codenamed Argo from Greek Mythology. Scorpio and Draco share the Greek naming convention and will be Pyxis enabled devices. Pyxis is the codename for the WiFi functionality used to transfer files between devices. Now to anyone bearing a Scorpio tattoo we say: Welcome to the Social.

Important Update: For purposes of clarification we feel the need to state the Scorpio will be a hard drive based unit not a flash based unit. "
