are my temps normal?

Just recently put together a computer with the e3110, thermalright utlra 120 extreme and gigabyte p35-ds3l.

I'm using coretemp .97 and with stock vcore, clocks etc, the temps are about 45c both cores. @ 3.6 and in orthos right now, temps are around 68c.

I'm using the rocketfish full tower case and a zalman zm-f3 as intake and cpu fan. One thing I noticed is that when I put the HS on top of the cpu, it was so slippery it slide to the side a bit. Another thing is even after the thing is bolted down, you can still twist and slide it with little force.

Is there anything else I can do, or should I just go ahead and RMA it?

the HS slipping aroudn the CPU is normal. how much can u twist/slide it? normally u can move it a bit, but ur installation might have been bad..

a c2q @ 3.6, 68C is normal...

It's not a c2q tho. As for how far, I can probably twist it until it touches a the clip and slide the edge of the base to the cpu socket cover. Thought I must say that it's a lot easier to twist than slide.

Did you lap the base of the TRUE? they're fairly notorious for having curved bases that will hinder contact with the IHS of your processor. Also, don't be too afraid of cranking down the mounting bolts, teh heatsink should be quite tight against the processor. Any twisting or sliding means that there is not enough pressure down onto the cpu.

No, I didn't lap. The base is a bit curved like an arrow with the sides having the least contact. As for bolting it down, I turned it with a screw driver until it's snug and then gave it another half of a twist.

With spring-loaded screws, you just screw them as tight as you can. 68C is still acceptable but I'm not sure if they're normal since that's not such a high OC. Did you apply the thermal grease correctly?

So far I've tried a dot in middle, spreading it all over the place, and a vertical line down the center without much effect.

i usually spread out the thermal paste with a card similar to a credit card.

isn't an intel xeon e3110 essentially in the same family as c2d/c2q?

I think that's actually a problem with the TRUE's socket 777 bracket. Even Anandtech's review says the TRUE will still turn a bit. I know that it still does on mine and I have the same motherboard.

However, some people say CoreTemp isn't entirely accurate. Some are saying the Tjmax is actually 95c instead of the 105c reading on CoreTemp so you could subtract 10c from your temps.

Well, I'm just using core temp as a reference. Even when you subtract 10c from it, I think it's still warmer than usual at 58c.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and rma that thing before I pull my hair out.

58C is ok and you may see some temperature drops from letting the TIM cure, or bolting it down harder but, given your OC and the idle temps there is definately something amiss. The idle temps are usually the give-away with loose installations as they'll be a lot higher when the loat temps are slightly less out-of-wack. I'd crank them down a little harder and see if it helps if you're up for it if not, make sure and crank them down when the next chip gets in.

You only mentioned that you had an intake fan but you didn't say anything about an exhaust fan in your case. Does that mean that you don't have an exhaust fan? It would be better to have an exhaust fan rather than intake, if you only have one case fan.

Just tried it... torqued it so hard the screw driver slipped lol.... No effect :(

I have 2 intake and 1 exhaust in there. One came with the case that's sitting at the bottom and the other one I zip tied it to the lower 5.25 bay.

fwiw: With the rinky dink intel hsf stock @ 3.6 was ~52c vs 45 and 5min of orthos was ~82c vs 68. I don't think I'd be stress testing anymore for now.
