Are my HDD benchmark results normal?

Seems fine to me, My 74GB Raptor ges like 62MB on that test I belive. Either way Sandra sucks as a benchmark. Try HDTach and ATTO.

Also don't listen to sgtzulu I agree with his statement but either way I have never seen him put anything but crap in a thread so don't bother with him, he's just a troll.

well i have a maxtor ata133 30 gig 7200 rpm hard drive and my results were : randon access time: 14.3 ms, read burst speed 62.3 mb/s, read speed maximum 52.6 mb/s, minimum 25.9 mb/s, average 45.8mb/s. sorry but i dont have a place to upload the image to....

I noticed on my benchmark I seen no cpu activity during this benchmark, but others seem to have about 20 to 30 percent cpu activity, why? I also happen to have an lcd installed in my case that one use is to show my cpu activity at any time. The usage on the lcd didn't change either which was at 2 percent at the time. One other thing I noticed is that right at the end the speed increase very high to seemingly impossible speed which you can see in the graph and the max speed, what is up with that. I tried this test numerous times with good precision.

Wow, everyone's scores look very much way off here. CPU utilization should only be around ~5% or so, at least only in single digits. If you are getting 20-30% cpu time. I would look into that since there is definately something wrong with your system. Either it is set on PIO mode or you dont have your chipset drivers installed.

wseyller, what the heck kind of drive do you have? 1072MB/s max read....???? that does not look right.....

As for my scores... my 2 drives are both Western Digital 250GB SE 8MB ATA 7200RPM. I get 78.3MB/s burst rate. and average read speed of 50.MB/s. CPU utilization is 2% and random access is 14.0ms.

HDtach has very well known issues with some chipsets on the latest version(2.70). They will always display the wrong CPU ultilization. Mine reports 20-50%. There is nothing wrong with anyone's drives, thankfully. We can only wait until Simpli software releases the next update that will hopefully address these problems. Stragely, HDtach 2.61 is reported to not have these troubles. I wasn't able to find that version on google, though. All the link were dead.

Hmm. I still have a copy of 2.61, PM me with your e-mail if you want a copy.

The whole "CPU utilization under HDTach" is rather interesting. I was testing a friend's system, he has an Asus mobo with an AMD northbridge and an ALI southbridge, supports ATA-100. Well, with a recent-model WD 120GB JB drive, and also with his other older (now dead) Maxtor 60GB HD, he got numbers for CPU util. around 50%. Clearly that would normally indicate something was amiss, PIO mode, no chipset drivers, etc.

Yet, during normal system operation, it doesn't seem to suffer the same sorts of lags that would normally be symptomatic of the above-mentioned common HD issues.

Given that HDTach is known to produce strange CPU util. numbers on some systems, I had to conclude that in fact, nothing was wrong with his system. (Indeed, his 1.2Ghz Athlon system seems more responsive than my 1.6Ghz Athlon on an KT400/8235, HDs on a Promise Ultra100 TX2.)

When I am run it I get about 5% cpu utilization, but it's going up and down across the entire graph, excpet one spot near the center, kinda like this VVVVVVVVV_____VVVVVVVVVVVVV.

I just tested mine and I had about 13% CPU usage for the test. This is on an 845G with Intel AA installed on a WDC 80JB drive. My max read was 56.9MB.
