Are my harddrives bad?

Can't decide weather to RMA these IBM 75GXP 15GB Drives yet or not... They work from what I can tell good. But every so often, mainly when im trasnfering large loads of data from one drive to another or across Raid Partitions... I get this almost scrapping sound from the Harddrive(s). It's almost like someone taking their fingers and gently scratching them on a chalkboard. Sounds worse than it really is 😉

The system does crash at times, and does frezze up alot but that could be my board or something else.. Just woundering if it could be the drives..

Motherboard is KT7-Raid, 512 PC 133 Case 2 Ram

Thx for the Info

That sounds exactly like what happened to my 75GXP. I would occasionally get scraping sounds an they would go away. My drive finally conked out after about 4 months of it last week. At the time, it took me 45 mins just to transfer 1Gb of data from the bad drive to my second HDD. I ran the DFT test on the IBM site and it said my drive was bad and I had to RMA it.

Find the files here and test your drive out.

Oh one big thing!

Make sure you have your foam padding for your HDD. IBM is pretty strict when it comes to rmaing your stuff.

I ordered a new HDD and used the padding from that to return the old HDD in.

It's a 75GXP they have known issues, if it sounds bad RMA it before you can't get your data off of it.
