Are MS and the computer manufacturers including free vista upgrades on current model PC's?

I thought I saw someone, earlier this week, mention that MS or the computer manufacturers were offering free vista upgrades on their current PC's they have on sale with XP installed. Is this true. I was planning to build an HTPC, but found an HP a1640n that is nicely loaded and decently priced with media center installed. If I can get vista for free, then i may have to take the deal. But for whatever reason I didn't think to ask the salespeople at the store.

I believe so, it's been MS' practice in the past to give out free upgrade coupons right when the new OS is about to come out and you get the old one so I don't know why it would be different now.

Yeah it does appear to be true. Didn't figure it would be quite that easy to find on the net, should have looked before I posted. I still have to fully read the link, but since the one I want has MCE on it, they should upgrade me to the mce edition of vista right?

More than anything these are deals that the OEMs are working out, so it's best to confirm with them what you'd get the upgrade to.

UPGRADE PATH IS:

The upgrade program for which you are eligible is dependant on what HP or Compaq computer you purchase and Microsoft operating system is preloaded. For consumers who purchase in the United States and Canada, the available upgrades are:

(I edited this down to what is applicable to you.)

** Note: If you are planning to upgrade a Windows Vista Capable Media Center Edition PC that does not display the Windows Vista Premium Ready designation, your system may require additional hardware to run premium features offered with some Windows Vista versions. However please note that all Windows Vista Capable PCs can run the core functionalities of Windows Vista, when properly installed. Please visit www.windowsvista.com/getready for more details.
