I'm new to this whole laundry thing. Should I shell out the few extra bucks for the more expensive stuff, or is it just a marketing scam?

According to a consumer reports issue a while back, the wal-mart brand was the best buy. It's $2.97 for the mid-size one. I think 2nd place was Gain.

Just get regular stuff though and wash in cold water. My clothes have been washed in ALL Free and Clear for 10 years and it's worked fine.

I used Tide for a while, then tried Cheer or All, I forget. That seemed to be a bit harsher on the clothes, I noticed t-shirts wearing out more quickly. Then I switched to Era, and all has been well for a couple years.

I use the Arm & Hammer stuff that's always on s ale at Target. Works fine for me.

I wash everything on t he cold cycle and haven't noticed any fading. And maybe I'm just doing something wrong, but I don't think there's much you can do about jeans fading... I think that's pretty much inevitable over time.
