Are monitors high definition?

All modern (hell even ancient PC monitors) are progressive scan, and refresh the entire picture at once. As long as your monitor can display a 720P or 1080i/1080P picture... ie 1280x720 or 1920x1080 then you can display HDTV resolutions in all their glory.

Most monitors can do 1280x720, but most can't do 1920x1080. Also remember LCD screens are limited to one max resolution, but CRT's have alot of leeway when choosing a resolution.

By definition any display device capable of showing at least 720 lines of horizontal resolution is "HD".

So if you monitor can to 1024x768 or higher then yes.

depends. 720p yes,most. 1280x720
but 1920x1080i/p? then it really depends on the monitor
if its a smaller crt you may not have enough phosphor dots to resolve the actual detail of that resolution. you know how it is, drive a crt past its optimal resolution and things become a bit blurry

then what about my ATI control center....

It says I can enable 720p or 1080x but not to do so if it cant be supported as it may damage my screen....

shrugs? I have a 22 inch mitsubishi diamond pro 2070sb, its a sick monitor, goes up to 1600x1200 well and fine (I think it goes up higher than that into the 2100+ area acording to a pdf i read)

That is a warning statement from ATI which makes sense. A resolution set too high or refresh rate set too high can actually burn out a monitor. I've lost two monitors before by setting the refresh screen too high.

hm, just set it to 1600x1200 then and let the hdtv card or video card scale the video to fit:p

Thanks for the replies... So in other words, high definition gaming has been around before next generation game consoles emerged....

The option you're looking out is probably for the tv out, or for hooking a TV directly to the DVI port. Regardless, it's not for you.
