This came up today and no one really knew for sure. If so, why do you think that is?

All kinds of animals have refused to eat in captivity in zoos.

Black widow spiders and praying mantii (males of both) are dying to mate.

Male Decapodians also die after mating.
Doctor Zoidberg, for one example, would have died had he been more successful at the mating process.

Saw a cat lay in the middle of the road untill someone finally hit it. Can't confirm it's motivation though

As a kid my grandfather caught a squirrel monkey, we were going to keep it as a pet however, it refuses to eat. After two days we had to released it.

Dolphins and whales have been known to intentionally beach in order to off themselves.

They're scared of the sharks, come on.

I was going to smash a bug, I think it knew what was coming, so instead of running, before whatever was coming down on it, just froze to get smashed and "wham!"

Humans, unless they're an infested Terran, have no choice but to commit suicide.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the "Op" meant by modern was "today," or in "our day." Odd to say modern, as humans do have a history.

my goldfish tried to commit suicide by jumping out of the tank, guess that is like a whale beaching itself

I'm sure there's a chimp/ape/monkey somewhere that jumped to his/her death from high tree branch in the rainforest. Probably depressed from losing a loved one.

suicide is a deliberate act of ending one's own life.

To do this, there must be a consciousness of self. I believe only humans possess this.

besides, if a whale or porpoise wanted to commit suicide, it could just simply drown. Beaching seems more like a navigational issue.

You sure he wasn't just into the kinky stuff and it backfired? Monkeys are a nasty bunch, after all...

I think your social circle fails at biology/zoology.
