Are Meta Tags necessary nowadays?

I know they used to be really popular in the old days with most websites, but do they still serve their purpose nowadays?

er, google caches all pages it has scanned, and keeps a record of what text is on them on a huge master list. When you search for a page, it searches the text for direct relevance, and then scans other similar websites for how many links are to that page, to determine how likely it is the page you want, through how many other people link to it.

Google uses popuarlity of your site and the number and popualrtity of other sites that link to it more than just matching text.
 
Yes, you should still use the description and keywords metatags. Although Google does not use the keywords metatag, other search engines do, and Google still does use the description metatag.
