I don't know anything about them and daughter may be needing one.

What's the deal? Can she get free software only for that platform, or what?

Hardware's going to be cheaper, more compatable and upgradeable on the Wintel side.

more compatible? i've never seen a piece of mac hardware that didn't work right, but seen plenty of wintel hardware that didn't.

More compatable for hardware repairs and upgrading. No idea what software she needs to run, so I don't know how that will fare...

It's no contest. He'll be able to pick and choose from a plethora of cases, motherboards, processors, video cards, memory etc., at all price points. Not to mention using existing parts from other machines, or using parts from her machine when she upgrades to newer stuff.

She'll be using it at school and that's what they use.

Is she starting college, possibly in some art-related major? It probably isn't a bad idea to get advice from the instructors. For the most part though, look for the same thing in a Mac as you would in a PC, just know that the processor speeds don't line up MHz for MHz.

To answer your specific question, Apple != Mac, Apple makes Macintosh computers. There used to be other companies that made Macintosh-compatible computers, but not anymore. If they refer to an Apple computer, they're referring to a Macintosh, I doubt they'd expect her to have an Apple II. :)

The school my son is considering, offers choice of Apple or Dell configurations.

If they don't give you a choice, bend over, 'cause you're screwed. I'm disgusted by her school's platform choice, not you.

For laptops, I might even consider Apple, because they aren't that far off in price. Everything's proprietary in a laptop anyway, so that's a wash. If your daughter needs a desktop, then an Apple is way overpriced.

My son won't be attending till next year, so their requirements will be different at that time. You know as well as I do, that Hot Deals always come up for Dell, so that could easily sway me to a Dell over Apple in the laptop decision. I prefer to have choice either way. Having them dictate that Apple is the only way to go, makes me wonder about the school in the first place!

I'd go with a HT p4 simply because of price/performance for video encoding. For now (might change soon) the cpu is about all that matters for video encoding, and HT adds ~15% or so to encoding speed, which Intel chips are faster at to begin with - unless A64s are beating HT p4s now? Wrong forum btw.

i highly doubt that they will kick you out for not having "thier" pc. or even check for that matter.

I can easily see a problem if you insist on using a Dell, and the class assignment is based on some friggen Adobe application that isn't available for the PC, or is of a different version, or whatever.

Your best bet is to wait till she's begun school and has a good idea of what kinds
of tasks she'll be faced with. Most likely there will be adequate computer labs that would
almost negate the necessity of having one's own pc save for the convenience. Of course
I could do just fine at my school because there are 10s of labs open 24hrs but this may
not be so at a smaller school. In any case for the first few weeks she can gauge what her
needs might be (needs not so much wants) which could end up saving you quite a bit of money
in the end.
