Are long IDE Cables bad (heard they may corrupt data eventually?)

I remember reading a post here a week or so ago bout how there is a type of limit on the length of an IDE cable... if it is too long it may eventually corrupt data? I have a bunch of 24" rounded cables and I'm a bit worried

The IDE cable spec says 18" max. however many people, including myself, use longer cables.

i got a 36 incher for the hell of it. no problems here

I got some Antec Cobra cables (rounded) 26" with extra shielding and a ground wire, that corrupted my data, waiting for a replacement from Newegg. Don't think I want to put them on though, my trust is gone. Got some 18" replacements in the mean time from Belkin that I'm just going to keep on I think, although they are black and not UV sensitive like I wanted.
