He told me a fun story: in one rural area, this town had the only OBGyn doctor people for hundreds of miles. Also in town was a beotch of a lawyer that made her millions by filing pain and suffering suits against said doctors. Lawyer gets knocked up. Doctors: We will not help deliver your baby . . .. b!tch!
And so she was SOL.

Doesn't that violate the Hippocratic oath? I don't think a doctor can ethically refuse to treat someone in an emergency. I understand their frustration with her, but if no doctor in the community had screwed up, chances are she and her clients would never have recovered a dime.Originally posted by: LordMorpheus He told me a fun story: in one rural area, this town had the only OBGyn doctor people for hundreds of miles. So you are saying that frivilous lawsuits are never won? You said that you are a lawyer, so you should know better. And it doesn't really matter if they lose or win. The amount of time spent, the reputation lost, the dollars spent on defending themselves, and the added stress of knowing someone is accusing you of something (thereby making you doubt even yourself) is a total loss for a doctor.
And an OBGYN is not like a critical care unit. Denying prenatal testing, advise and checkups, sonigrams and all the other stuff that comes with a normal pregnancy are not in violation of the hippocratic oath. If she was having her child and there was litterally nowhere else for her to go (or even if there was) she can come in and recieve care.

I know. That's what happens when attorneys get involved . . .

Yes, but in the original post, LordMorpheus specifically indicated that the doctors refused to deliver the baby - it had nothing to do with prenatal care. Again, to me, they have the responsibility to provide this care, and you have admitted as much.
I realize there are frivolous lawsuits, but, again, he mentioned her earning millions - a plaintiff's personal injury lawyer is only paid where there is a recovery, so presumably at least many of the suits were not baseless.
For my part, I would have no interest in being a plaintiff's PI lawyer, but I think the public generally has a completely wrongheaded impression that juries are giving out generous recoveries for frivlous suits like candy, when that just isn't the case. If I am supposed to feel sorry for physicians (who, in the main, are paid MUCH better than, and in my opinion are often every bit as insufferable as lawyers), well cry me a river.
What do you call a hundred lawyers at the bottom of the ocean?Originally posted by: Don_Vito
