Are laptops worthwhile?

Recently i became interested in possibly buying a laptop. I have heard a lot of bad things about them as far as upgrading. Is there a laptop out there that is easily upgradable?

Sure, many laptops now are "upgradable".. I think where most people run into snags is with the Video and Processor. I have not seen a laptop with these parts replaceable. The memory on most laptops can be upgraded to far more than you really even need, and the hard disk is pretty ample on most new laptops. The thing is, do you want portable or do you want power?

I have done some work on some dell laptops, they can be a git to get into, replacing the exhaust fan was fun enough. Graphics are on board and don't expect an AGP Slot 😉, I think that you may be able to upgrade the CPU on some. Memory & HD is easier on laptops than on desktops.

What has driven you towards a latop over a desktop, mobile business use or my favourite, just plain showing off your new toy? 🙂

When I first got my compaq presario 1800 15" TFT lappy it had a celeron 500, it now has a PIII 850. Compaq swore up and down that you couldnt upgrade it but I finally got the part number for the pIII850 chip and just had my company order it through a compaq oem dealer. Works great. Too bad I cant upgrade the video as well. 🙁
