I remember when middle of the pack laptops where like $2,000
Now i see a ghz PIII on pricewatch for under $1,000!?!?!
The fastest 1.2 ghz PII is only $1220. Why are they so cheap now.
All I do is use my old laptop to run a few simulations, but at these prices I don't think I can resist.

Anybody know the quality of these off brand notebooks? Am I better off spending the extra bucks on a Dell?

My laptop toshiba 2805-S402 cost $2250 back in march, it's PIII850 w/ Geforce 2 Go and all the other fun stuff.

I think most of the big name brand laptops are still up there like sony, toshiba, and HP, easily being $2000+

Some of the faster laptops that are $1000 or lower are that cheap because they sometimes user desktop processors instead of mobile ones.

Fast and nice size.

Already upgraded the ram to 384mb.....I don't know how your suppose to cope with 128mb on win2kpro....it hugs enough to start with.....

I paid 1000 dollars for my Toshiba 800 mhz celeron at the beginning of the summer. Its a great laptop and does everything i need it too.. I kinda wish i held out a few months becuase They are really cheap now, i could have gotten something faster if i hadn't been so impatient.

I'm interested in the Dells because I can get a massive discount on their laptops. :D

Primary needs include running a few basic programs like spice, matlab, and a few other I won't mention but none of which justifies the speed. But hey, at $1,000 why not? Internet connection I don't need. Storage is important a nic would be nice. Right now the Inspiron 4100 looks nice. Gonna ask what kinda price I can get on it. Or should I wait and find a nice Athlon 4 based notebook, but seeing Dell don't support AMD, I won't be getting a discount :(

Hmm.there don't seem to be any P4s

Yep I would definitely recommend the Dell Inspiron 4100, a great laptop.

Just wait for another hot deal to come around, I helped a few friends save $150, get free shipping ($50 savings), a FREE 2nd battery ($99 value), a FREE Fuji Finepix 1300 digital camera ($150 value) and a FREE DVD upgrade.
