Are laptop temps too high?

I have an MSI gaming laptop that I use to edit video. I edit our church video every week and this takes about an hour. The temps as measured by Core Temp are 90°C on one of four cores. The other cores are 85 to 87, and this lasts for one hour per week. There is even a hardware switch to put the cooling fans in high (which I use when editing the video). The rest of the week the idle temps are about 45 - 50°C. Are these high temps going to harm my new laptop?

That sounds reasonable for a laptop under a constant high load. Sure, it's rather hot, but still a good 15+ degrees off what would damage anything. Idling at 45-50 is also normal, as long so that means the fans are running very slowly/off. Just keep it reasonably dust free, and it should last you years.

that, and are the thermal sensors that reliable and accurate? I've heard they can be off by +/- 5-10 degrees.

Don't worry about it. 😉
